Industrial Revolution 4.0 — The Intelligent Factory

January 14, 2016

Industrial Revolution 4.0 the intelligent factory

Manufacturing companies are intensifying the use of innovative big-data analytics technologies in their production lines to increase competitiveness by improving strategic and real-time decision-making. With that objective in mind these innovative technology companies are spearheading a new industrial revolution.

The 4th industrial revolution is focused on the connectivity and analysis of the enterprise value chain. This industrial innovation is built on the 3rd industrial revolution, Digital Fabrication, which started in the late 80s with the introduction of CAD CAM tools and factory automation.

The manufacturing plant of the future will interconnect all aspects of the company’s value chain. Part, process and quality data from suppliers, automation equipment, sensors, cameras, controllers will be stored and analyzed to find patterns that allow for the optimization of the enterprise value chain as a continuous system rather than a set of discrete events.

In the past few years we have seen the introduction of back office automation systems, now we are starting to see new data automation systems solely created for manufacturing environments, allowing for new levels of interconnectivity, data acquisition and analysis in the supply chain and the manufacturing facility.

The main elements of Industrial Innovation 4.0 are big-data analysis and storage systems, introduction of new sensors and control systems in the manufacturing process. The ability to interconnect the product order process, historical quality data, real-time machine monitoring and analysis allows the company to move from a diagnostics to a prognostic mindset. This change in behavior will lead the company to optimize the factory as a system based on customer demand and machine utilization.

Two companies at the forefront of the Industrial Innovation 4.0 are BEET Analytics and Sight Machine. These companies are showcasing very promising solutions for real-time monitoring and analysis of production, quality and supply chain data, driving to improvements on their customers’ bottom lines.
