Electric vehicles and the challenges of convergence

December 5, 2014

Electric vehicles (EVs) provide a fascinating early example of the convergence between industries that will become increasingly necessary as
the “Internet of Things” (the interconnection of sensors, devices, and everyday objects) continues to grow.

For both utilities and automotive companies, EVs present a huge opportunity—yet neither will be able to make the most of this
opportunity without collaborating.

Convergence between two industries that have such different cultures, skill-sets, and priorities is going to be a challenge. Success will depend on
their ability to establish the common languages, standards, methodologies and technology required to collaborate effectively

This paper explores how the concept of a “system of systems” approach can help both industries understand the nature of the challenges they face. It also explains how a systems engineering approach can help to resolve many of the issues and tackle the complexity that they are likely to face. Successful convergence will enable both industries to play their part in the creation of Smarter Cities and a Smarter Planet.
